We transformed this homeowners backyard from just a patch of grass to a complete outdoor living space!

Backyard Transformation: 700 Sq Ft Unilock Beacon Hill XL Patio Build in Windsor, Ontario

At Foxscapes, some of the most impactful projects come from simple underused spaces. In this case, we were brought in to transform a large but underutilized backyard that was nothing more than open grass. While the space had great potential, it lacked structure, function, and purpose.

The result is a fully redesigned 700 sq ft outdoor living space built with Unilock Beacon Hill XL, now divided into three distinct “rooms” that completely change how the homeowners use their backyard.

The Problem: A Large Yard With No Real Purpose

On paper, the backyard had everything going for it—plenty of square footage and a good layout around the home. But in reality, it wasn’t being used to its full potential.

The entire space was open grass with no defined areas for seating, dining, or entertaining. There were no clear connections between the home’s multiple entry points and the yard, which made the space feel disconnected from daily living.

Instead of being an extension of the home, the backyard functioned more like empty space—nice to look at, but not actively enjoyed.

The homeowners wanted a solution that would:

  • Add structure and purpose to the yard

  • Create dedicated zones for entertaining and relaxing

  • Improve flow between the home and outdoor space

  • Require minimal maintenance compared to lawn-heavy design

The Solution: A Multi-Zone Patio Built with Unilock Beacon Hill XL

To completely redefine the space, we designed and installed a 700 square foot custom patio system using Unilock Beacon Hill XL pavers. This material choice provided a natural stone look with the durability needed for a high-traffic outdoor living area.

Rather than building one large open patio, we divided the space into three intentional outdoor rooms, each serving a specific purpose:

1. Cooking & Bar Area

This zone was designed as the social hub of the backyard. Positioned for easy access from the home, it’s ideal for grilling, outdoor food prep, and casual gatherings around a future bar setup. The layout keeps guests close to the action while maintaining flow and functionality.

2. Dining Area

Centered within the patio design, the dining space creates a dedicated area for outdoor meals. Its positioning connects seamlessly between the cooking zone and lounge area, making it perfect for entertaining and hosting family dinners or gatherings.

3. Lounge Area

The final “room” was designed for relaxation. With space for outdoor furniture and seating, this area provides a comfortable retreat for unwinding, conversation, or enjoying the backyard atmosphere.

Seamless Connection to the Home

One of the most important aspects of this build was improving how the home interacts with the backyard.

We connected all three existing home entry points directly into the patio design, ensuring the space feels like a true extension of the house rather than a separate area.

Custom-built steps were installed leading from the sliding glass doors, creating smooth transitions between indoor and outdoor living. This not only improved functionality but also elevated the overall architectural flow of the backyard.

Now, no matter which door you step out of, you’re instantly connected to a thoughtfully designed outdoor living space.

The Build Process: From Grass to Finished Outdoor Living Space

The project began with full excavation of the existing lawn area to establish proper depth and grading. Because drainage and base preparation are critical for long-term performance, we carefully engineered the foundation to ensure stability across the entire 700 sq ft footprint.

A compacted aggregate base was installed and laser-leveled to create precise elevations for each patio zone. From there, we installed the Unilock Beacon Hill XL pavers, paying close attention to pattern consistency and clean transitions between each defined space.

Each section was shaped intentionally to create separation while maintaining a cohesive overall design. The step systems were integrated into the layout to ensure smooth access from all home entry points.

The final result is a structurally sound, visually balanced, and highly functional outdoor environment.

The Result: A Backyard Built for Living

What was once an open, unused grass yard is now a fully functional outdoor living space with purpose and definition.

The homeowners now enjoy:

  • A 700 sq ft custom patio built for entertaining and relaxation

  • Three distinct outdoor “rooms” with unique functions

  • Seamless access from all home entry points

  • A low-maintenance alternative to traditional lawn space

  • A dramatic increase in usable outdoor living area

Most importantly, the backyard now works with the home instead of sitting unused behind it.

Final Thoughts

This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can completely change the way a property is used. By replacing unused lawn space with a structured multi-zone patio system, we turned a blank backyard into a functional extension of the home.

Built with Unilock Beacon Hill XL, this space is designed to perform for years while maintaining a timeless, natural aesthetic.

At Foxscapes, our goal is simple: turn underused outdoor spaces into places people actually live in.
